One late evening I sat with my budgeting app open and my hands off the keyboard. I wanted Gemini's help with a month of spending, but the thought of pasting those numbers into a chat that would linger in my history made my stomach tighten a little. I closed everything and sent nothing.
What I'd like to share first is simple: you can choose, before the conversation starts, what gets kept and what doesn't. Two things make that possible—Temporary Chat, and the Activity setting.
Pick Temporary Chat at the door, not halfway through
Temporary Chat is a separate way to start a conversation. When you open a new chat, there's a dedicated button near the top (labels and positions can change with updates).
According to Google's help page, a Temporary Chat doesn't appear in your recent chats and isn't used to personalize future answers. The details live in the Gemini Apps Help page, and I'd check it for the latest wording.
Two points I keep in mind:
- You can't turn a normal chat into a temporary one midway, so decide at the start.
- "Not shown in the list" is not the same as "stored nowhere." Google explains that such chats may be held for a short period for service operation and safety. The exact number of days can change, so read the current help text.
Normal chat vs. Temporary Chat
| Aspect | Normal chat | Temporary Chat |
|---|---|---|
| Shown in recent chats | Yes | No |
| Used for personalized answers | Possibly, depending on settings | No |
| Picking up later | Resume from the list | Assume you can't |
| Good for | Plans and drafts you want to grow | One-off money, health, or personal questions |
The "can't resume" part cuts both ways. If a budget review will take several sittings, a Temporary Chat won't remember last time. Copy the conclusion into your own notes at the end—I've made that a habit.
My order: door, setting, deletion
1. Choose the door. Money, health, and family topics start in Temporary Chat. When unsure, I lean toward not keeping.
2. Look at the Activity setting. Whether normal chats are saved is governed by the app's Activity setting. Even with it off, Google says chats may be retained for a limited time, so I don't treat "off" as "gone."
3. Know how to remove what's left. For the day you start a normal chat by mistake, find out in advance how to delete an individual conversation and how to set automatic deletion.
Once all three are in place, mistakes feel recoverable—and that feeling turned out to be the real comfort.
Thin out the content, too
No setting protects what you type. Even in Temporary Chat, I avoid:
- Names, addresses, and account numbers
- Diagnoses and medications paired with a named clinic
- Names of family members or coworkers
For a budget, monthly take-home, total fixed costs, and a variable-cost breakdown are plenty. For a health worry, the course of symptoms ("a headache for three days, worse at night") shapes the advice far more than identity does.
Treat all of this as a starting point for organizing your thoughts; for diagnoses or investment decisions, please consult a professional.
Your first step today
The next time you want to talk through money or health, start from Temporary Chat instead of a normal one. That alone lifts most of the hesitation.
The principle, in one line: choose how it's kept at the door, and share only the numbers you need.
I will write about memory and personalization settings another time. It is a principle I plan to keep, however convenient the tools become.
