Gemini for Windows Opens with Alt + Space. Count What Already Owns That Key Before You Install

The Gemini app for Windows is summoned with Alt + Space, and its help page says nothing about what to do when the key does nothing. Here is what to count before installing, and a five-step order for the day it fails.

Gemini96Windowsdesktop appkeyboard shortcutsetup

I opened the official help page for the Gemini app on Windows late in the evening. The install steps took five lines, and the shortcut was one sentence: press Alt + Space.

What I was looking for came after that. If the key does nothing, where do you look? The help page has no section for a shortcut that does not respond, and it does not say where to change the key either.

As an indie developer, my own desk runs on an iMac, so I have not run the Windows app myself. Please read this as an order of checks built from the official pages and from how Windows behaves, not as a record of something I reproduced. I may be missing a case or two.

When a shortcut does nothing, count who got there first before you suspect that something is broken. That is the whole method, and the rest of this article is how I would apply it.

Alt + Space was never a free key

On Windows, pressing Alt + Space in the active window opens its system menu (Restore, Move, Size, Close). Gemini then tries to register the same combination as a global shortcut.

A Japanese news write-up of the launch also warns that Alt + Space often collides with other apps, without naming any. And when two resident tools fight over a key, the loser rarely shows an error. Nothing happens, and that is what makes it hard to diagnose.

Three checks before installing

Everything the help page requires fits in three rows.

What to checkWhat the official page saysWhere to look
Your PCWindows 10 or later, 8 GB RAM or more, 200 MB free disk, a stable connection. x64 and ARM64 are supportedSettings → System → About
Your accountA personal Google Account works. Work or school accounts work only if the administrator has turned Gemini access onAsk your administrator if sign-in fails
The installDownload GeminiSetup.exe from the official site, run it, open Gemini from the Start menu, sign ingemini.google/desktop

If a work account cannot sign in, that is an administrator setting, not a key problem. I wrote down how to tell waiting from a fault in this article on Workspace rollouts.

Before you install, list what might want the same key

Open a text file and write down three things:

  • Resident launchers, search tools, and other AI assistants (count the icons in the notification area)
  • Keys you assigned yourself for screen capture, translation, or dictionary lookups
  • Keys registered in input-switching or keyboard utility tools

If all three are empty, install and move on. If not, you now know which key assignments to check first, and you will not be guessing later which side stopped responding.

The day it does not open: five checks, in this order

Write down the result after each step.

  1. Confirm Gemini is actually running. Open it from the Start menu and look for its icon on the taskbar or in the notification area. If it is not running, the key cannot work.
  2. Watch what reacts when you press the key. If the system menu opens at the top left of a window, Windows got the key first. If another app responds, that app owns it.
  3. Stop resident tools one at a time and try again. Stop one, press the key, repeat. Stopping several at once hides the culprit.
  4. Change Gemini's own shortcut. The official site and the news write-up say the shortcut can be changed in settings. The help page does not say where, so you will have to look through the settings screen.
  5. If that still fails, open it from the taskbar or Start menu. The app works without the key. I would take "opens reliably every day" over "opens fast."

Under pressure I tend to do steps three and four at the same time. It has not gone well. The thing gets fixed, and I never learn why.

Features the Windows app does not have yet

According to the news write-up, the following Mac features are not available on Windows yet and are planned to arrive gradually.

FeatureMacWindows
Screen sharingPress both Command keysNot available
Voice dictationDictate into any appNot available
Working with local folders (Gemini Spark)Summaries into Docs and SheetsNot available
Summon keyOption + Space (mini chat) / Option + Shift + Space (full chat)Alt + Space

If screen sharing does not start when you press the key, you may be looking for a feature that does not exist yet rather than a collision. The official site says availability varies and gives no timeline.

One thing to do today

Before you open the installer, count the icons in your notification area and write them in a text file. That alone narrows the search for the evening the key does nothing.

I still start my own day by checking, one by one, what the small icons in the corner of the screen are doing.
